Street drains, Fray Bentos exports and a lagoon mouth

A place worth remembering

Colonia: two street-drain layouts

The Intendencia of Colonia distinguishes two street forms: one has a central drain, while another has drains along both edges. Its account associates these layouts with Portuguese and Spanish construction, respectively.[1]

Fray Bentos: the works’ export phases

UNESCO identifies two phases in the site’s output: Liebig sent corned beef and meat extract to Europe from 1865; Anglo exported frozen meat from 1924. The complex began with a meat-processing factory founded in 1859.[2]

Laguna de Castillos: the 2001 Ramsar account

The 2001 Ramsar sheet records a water surface of 8,000 ha and a mean depth of 1 m. It describes the ocean link through Arroyo Valizas as opening intermittently at high water, with storm waves eroding the sand bar.[3]
