Lakes and layered basilicas in North Macedonia

Lake Prespa recharges part of the water at springs beside Lake Ohrid. At Stobi, an Early Christian basilica stands above two earlier synagogues; at Heraclea Lyncestis, a basilica floor preserves garden and aquatic motifs.

A place worth remembering

Prespa and Ohrid’s springs

The study links Lake Prespa with springs near St. Naum and Tushemisht on Lake Ohrid. A 2002 tracer test confirmed the underground connection.[1]

Synagogues beneath Stobi’s basilica

The National Institution Stobi describes an Early Christian basilica above two synagogue layers. Its account dates Synagogue I to the 2nd century AD and Synagogue II to the late 3rd or early 4th century.[2]

A garden scene at Heraclea

The Bitola museum describes the Great Basilica’s narthex mosaic as including a frieze of fruit trees and birds, which it reads as a garden or paradise scene; the border is made of octagonal fields showing freshwater and marine animals.[3]

Good to know

A few clear answers before you explore.

What do the isotope percentages describe?

The study abstract estimates Prespa’s contribution at 37–42% of the water at St. Naum and 52–54% at Tushemisht. These are spring-specific shares, not a percentage of Lake Ohrid’s total volume.[1]

What does the Stobi column inscription record?

The site account associates Claudius Tiberius Polycharmos with a house donation: he gave part of his home for synagogue use.[2]

What motifs appear in the Great Basilica’s narthex mosaic?

The museum describes a garden scene alongside aquatic animals in the mosaic’s decorated border.[3]
