Wooden toys remade from historic templates

A shop page of the Museo Torres García, which gives an address on Peatonal Sarandí in Montevideo, says Aladdin Toy facsimiles are made by hand at Taller Universal, which holds sample original pieces and Torres García’s templates. A donated tile collection and the Teatro Solís roof add two more Montevideo stories.

A place worth remembering

Facsimiles of transformable toys

The Museo Torres García shop page says its Aladdin Toy facsimiles are made exclusively at Taller Universal, each set entirely by hand. The workshop holds sample original pieces and the templates Torres García used. Each set includes an instruction sheet created by the artist, listing all the pieces and some of the combinations.[1]

An architect’s tile collection

Montevideo’s Tile Museum (Museo del Azulejo) shows the private collection of architect Alejandro Artucio, assembled over 40 years. It was donated to the city government in September 2004. The museum is at Yi 1444.[2]

A wooden roof replaced with metal

Teatro Solís says its wooden roof was replaced in 1881 by a metal-framed structure of French origin. It says the side sections were built between 1869 and 1874 with premises for housing and shops.[3]
