A place worth remembering

Acahualinca tracks preserved in volcanic tuff

A study in the International Journal of Earth Sciences places two pits with human footprints in the Acahualinca barrio in Managua’s northern outskirts. The footprint layer is tuff within a series of rapidly accumulated volcanic ash (tephra) deposits; in the northern pit the swath of footprints is up to 5.6 metres wide, and in its central group people walked in each other’s footsteps, which makes the number of individuals hard to determine.[1]

An arboretum arranged around ecological regions

A 2017 Ministry of Education guide described the National Arboretum Juan Bautista Salas Estrada as a small educational woodland in Managua. It listed 235 Nicaraguan plant species, native and representative of four ecological regions, each with its common and scientific name.[2]

A 2017 guide recorded a university herbarium

The same 2017 guide placed Nicaragua’s National Herbarium on the Universidad Centroamericana campus on Avenida Universitaria and reported that it was founded in 1970. It said the herbarium holds specimens from the country’s ecosystems.[2]
