Kuwait City: a maritime museum shaped by its interior

The Qattan Architects project account describes a Maritime Museum inside a former athletic hall in downtown Kuwait City. A perimeter platform and perforated screens carry the seafaring theme into the rooms.

A place worth remembering

A ship-like plan around the room

According to Qattan Architects, a timber platform runs around the room’s inner boundary and links opposite corners. As the design developed, its pointed curve came to resemble a ship, bringing the maritime theme into the layout itself.[2]

Panels made for changing displays

Qattan Architects says certain display walls are thin wooden sheets perforated at regular intervals. Hooks can be fitted through the openings for changing exhibits; where sheets overlap, light falls through in layered patterns.[2]

Maritime cues in smaller details

Qattan Architects links the concrete floor’s reflective epoxy finish to water; rope door handles add another seafaring detail. These references appear in the room’s surfaces as well as its platform and screens.[2]
