Levera’s rare pond outflow and Carriacou boatbuilding

A place worth remembering

Runoff and the Levera outlet

Levera Pond is a freshwater body in the coastal wetland. The 2012 Ramsar sheet says its connection to the sea is occasional: sustained heavy rain or a high storm surge can cause an overflow at Levera Beach.[1]

A dated leatherback nesting record

The 2012 information sheet records about 900 nests of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) at Levera Beach in 2007, attributing the figure to Grenada’s Department of Fisheries. This is a historical observation in the sheet, not a current wildlife count.[1]

Boat names at launch on Carriacou

The Grenada National Trust frames boatbuilding on Carriacou and Petite Martinique as everyday island work: boats are used for fishing and for carrying people or produce between the islands. UNESCO’s description highlights one launch custom: the boat’s godparents, who by tradition are children younger than eight, unveil its name, embroidered on a red flag that flies from the deck.[3][2]
