Water and street design in Basseterre
According to the National Archives, waste water from the Independence Square fountain drained to a tank at Bay Road and Adlam Street. Elsewhere in Basseterre, Fort Street and the Circus date from the rebuilding after an 1867 fire, and a memorial with a clock and drinking fountain was made in Glasgow.

A place worth remembering
From fountain to tank
According to the National Archives of St Kitts and Nevis, waste water from the fountain in Independence Square drained into a tank on a piece of land called Greatheed land, at the corner of Bay Road and Adlam Street. The same page describes the fountain as the monument to the successful completion of a project to pipe water into Basseterre.[1]
A street widened after a fire
After the 1867 fire, the new arrangements for Basseterre included widening Fort Street and laying out the Circus. When the town was rebuilt, it was decided to make its streets easier for the fire truck to navigate.[2]
A clock and drinking fountain
The Berkeley Memorial was erected at the Circus in 1883. George Smith and Co of Glasgow designed and made the structure, which combines a clock with a drinking fountain.[3]
