City
Andorra la Vella, between slope and square
Above the streets of Andorra la Vella, the Rec del Solà recalls how residents channelled water to the sunny slope. Down in the centre, Sant Esteve’s bells and Plaça del Poble show two other ways the city has marked shared time.

A place worth remembering
Water crossed the sunny slope
Around a hundred families joined forces to build the Rec del Solà irrigation channel. Their association formed in 1880, and work on the channel finished in 1884. Floods in November 1982 damaged it; an agreement signed on 1 September 1987 led to a public promenade along the route, while the irrigation group continued distributing water.[1]
Sant Esteve’s bells mark different centuries
The Romanesque belfry of Sant Esteve belongs to the twelfth century, though a third level was added in the 1940s after lightning damage. One Sant Esteve bell dates to 1517; another, cast in 1801, marks the hours. The tower therefore carries changes in both structure and sound.[2]
A renewed meeting place
Plaça del Poble was officially inaugurated after remodelling in June 2026. The municipal account notes that the Esbart Dansaire dance group, which danced at the square’s original inauguration in 1982, led the dancing again at the 2026 ceremony. This is a different kind of public space from the hillside channel: a central square built around gathering.[3]
