Vaduz and the reflective black façade

In the heart of Vaduz’s pedestrian zone, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is a dark cuboid whose façade material, the museum says, echoes the Rhine Valley landscape. Inside, six exhibition rooms surround two switchback staircases, and the neighbouring Hilti Art Foundation building is physically linked to it.

A place worth remembering

A façade made from mineral ingredients

The museum describes a façade of cement tinted with carbon black and iron oxide, black basalt and embedded river pebbles. According to the museum, polishing gives the surface a gentle reflectiveness and a slightly wavy look, and the material echoes the Rhine Valley landscape.[1]

Six rooms around two staircases

The interior is organised as six exhibition rooms around two switchback staircases. Four upper-floor rooms are skylight galleries; on the ground floor, one gallery uses side light and the other artificial light.[1]

A connected art-building pair

The Hilti Art Foundation building has been the museum’s neighbour since 2015. The museum describes its cubic form of polished white concrete, and a staircase physically links the two buildings from the entrance and ticket desk to the foundation’s first exhibition level.[1]
