Saudi Arabia: unfinished carving, historic springs and rock art beside a former lake
At Hegra, an unfinished tomb facade preserves traces of carving; a 2017 paper records an older account of Al-Ahsa’s springs; and Jubbah’s rock art lies in a landscape that once looked out over a freshwater lake.
At a glance
A place worth remembering
Hegra’s unfinished tomb facade
UNESCO describes Hegra’s monumental tombs as carved directly into sandstone. At the isolated tomb IGN110, also called the Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza, the Hegra Conservation Project says the lower facade and the entrance decoration were left unfinished, and that the carving traces show different stages of construction.[1][2]
A dated account of Al-Ahsa’s springs
Al Hassa in Saudi Arabia’s eastern province appears as a historical example in a 2017 hydrology paper. The paper quotes FAO (2009), which says some 35 springs supplied the oasis until the late 1970s. It reports that after tube wells were drilled to support expanding commercial farming, the springs had dried by the mid-1980s.[3]
Jubbah’s panels and a vanished lake
Jabal Umm Sinman’s rock art lies in a landscape that, in UNESCO’s words, once overlooked a freshwater lake; the lake has since disappeared. UNESCO links environmental change since the mid-Holocene to settlement patterns reflected in the panels.[4]
Good to know
A few clear answers before you explore.
What remains unfinished at tomb IGN110?
The Hegra Conservation Project describes the lower facade as unfinished: its four pilasters have no defined bases or shafts, and the entrance decoration was not carved.[2]
Why is the Al Hassa spring figure historical?
It comes from FAO’s 2009 account, quoted in a 2017 paper, rather than a current spring count; the report dates the springs’ drying to the mid-1980s.[3]
What environmental change does UNESCO link to Jubbah’s rock art?
The lake is gone. UNESCO also links environmental change since the mid-Holocene with settlement traces in the rock art.[4]
