Eclipse observations at Sundy and island ecologies

Dyson, Eddington and Davidson’s 1920 account locates the 1919 eclipse telescope at Roça Sundy; UNESCO pages describe plant endemism on São Tomé and contrasting relief on Príncipe.

At a glance

Eclipse plates
The 1920 report records 16 plates and the authors’ inference that cloud thinned during totality’s final third.[1]
Equator crossing
A 2023 Tentative List submission places it through the centre of Ilhéu das Rolas.[2]
Tinhosas islets
Tinhosa Grande: 20 ha; Tinhosa Pequena: 3 ha; Ramsar designation: 21 August 2006.[5]

A place worth remembering

Cloud and plates at Roça Sundy

The 1920 report places the telescope on a walled observing plot beside the Roça Sundy house. The observers record 16 plates during totality after a heavy storm that morning on 29 May 1919; they infer that cloud cover thinned in the eclipse’s final third.[1]

Obô and the equator on São Tomé

UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere page places Obô Natural Park at the core of São Tomé’s biosphere reserve and reports 148 plant species endemic to the island. A separate 2023 World Heritage Tentative List submission places the equator through the centre of Ilhéu das Rolas, south of São Tomé.[3][2]

Príncipe’s slopes and the Tinhosas islets

UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere page links Príncipe’s change in terrain from north to south with distinct bioclimates; the island’s southern range is formed of phonolitic peaks. The latest information in Ramsar’s Tinhosas site record is from 2006. It describes the islets as uninhabited and reports a breeding community of migrating waterbirds numbering over 300,000.[4][5]
