Cape Verde: Fogo’s lava-affected buildings, Boa Vista’s nests and Sal’s saltworks
Jenkins and colleagues’ post-eruption survey records how lava affected buildings in Chã das Caldeiras on Fogo. A separate 2025 study models loggerhead nesting across seven islands, assigning 65.5% of predicted nests to Boa Vista. On Sal, a 2016 Cabo Verde submission to UNESCO’s Tentative List describes the Pedra de Lume saltworks and its cableway to the pier.
At a glance
- Buildings in Chã das Caldeiras reached by lava (2014–15)
- About 260 of roughly 350; around 170 were destroyed or buried and 90 damaged[1]
- Boa Vista’s share of projected loggerhead nests in a 2025 seven-island model
- 65.5% of predicted nests across the seven islands included in the model[3]
- Pedra de Lume salt cableway
- The 2016 Tentative List entry dates the cableway to 1921[4]
A place worth remembering
Fogo: a building survey after the 2014–15 eruption
After Fogo’s 2014–15 eruption, Jenkins and colleagues assessed buildings in Chã das Caldeiras. Their survey placed about 260 of roughly 350 buildings in the area reached by lava; around 170 were destroyed or buried, and 90 were damaged.[1]
Boa Vista: a model of loggerhead nesting
A 2025 study used drone imagery from 61 beach segments on seven islands to estimate loggerhead nest density. Applied to mapped beaches, the model assigned 65.5% of predicted nests to Boa Vista. This is a modelled share within the selected islands, not a direct count across the country.[3]
Sal: Pedra de Lume’s salt cableway
Cabo Verde’s 2016 submission to UNESCO’s Tentative List describes the Pedra de Lume saltworks inside a volcanic crater on Sal. It also records a cableway that carried salt to the pier, dating it to 1921 and giving its length as 1,100 metres and its capacity as about 25 tonnes of salt an hour.[4]
Good to know
A few clear answers before you explore.
Did seismic activity precede Fogo’s 2014 eruption?
Yes. Klügel and colleagues report nearly 300 small seismic events beneath Pico do Fogo during the 17–23 November swarm. On 23 November, a fissure opened on the volcano’s southwest flank.[2]
How do UNESCO’s World Heritage and Tentative Lists differ here?
UNESCO dates Cidade Velha’s World Heritage inscription to 2009. Pedra de Lume appears in Cabo Verde’s 2016 Tentative List submission, an inventory of places the country intends to consider for nomination.[5][4][6]
Which islands were outside the 2025 turtle-nesting model?
The study excluded Fogo, Brava and São Nicolau, citing limited sandy-beach habitat and low nesting activity. Its projected share for Boa Vista therefore applies to the seven islands included in the analysis.[3]
