A town plan, a sabkha and mangroves in Qatar
Al Zubarah’s late-18th-century town plan lies near Qatar’s northwest coast. At Khor Al Adaid, north-northwest shamal winds carry quartz sand from dunes onto a sabkha; in the northeast, Al Thakhira includes natural mangroves and Um Far island.
At a glance
A place worth remembering
Al Zubarah: a town planned around its bay
Qatar Museums’ visitor guide describes Al Zubarah as a walled 18th-century town. Its defensive arc ran about 2.5 kilometres around the town and bay, joining the opposite shores. Inside, many streets meet at right angles, while some neighbourhoods follow a tighter grid. A later settlement covered about one fifth of its predecessor’s area.[1]
Khor Al Adaid: a wind-fed sabkha
Qatar’s 2008 Tentative List entry describes the sabkha expanding eastward as north-northwest shamal winds deliver quartz sand from dunes. The submission also notes young dolomite crystals precipitating in hypersaline groundwater beneath the flat. Khor Al Adaid is on the Tentative List, not inscribed on the World Heritage List.[2]
Al Thakhira: island and mangroves
Qatar e-Nature groups the mangroves with Um Far, a small island, in Al Thakhira’s marine section.[3]

Is Khor Al Adaid a World Heritage Site?
Qatar submitted it to the Tentative List in the natural category on 18 March 2008; it is not an inscribed property.[2]
Where does the page place Um Far and the mangroves?
In Al Thakhira Reserve’s marine section.[3]
