An unfurled mat on Port Vila’s seafront

Beca’s July 2017 newsletter says its seafront design draws on an unfurled mat; weaving patterns and frayed mat edges, a feature it notes on ceremonial mats, recur from the promenade to the seawall. At the Vanuatu Cultural Centre, fieldworkers and Film Unit staff also gather audio-visual material and photographs of cultural events around the country.

A place worth remembering

A shoreline shaped by a mat motif

Beca’s concept carries the mat image across several kinds of public space, from the promenade and park paths to the seawall, furnishings and buildings. A showcase by the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects describes the completed seafront redevelopment as 1,200 metres long.[1][2]

An archive built from field recordings

Fieldworkers, including Film Unit staff, collect audio-visual recordings and photographs of cultural events across Vanuatu. The archive catalogue adds identifying and descriptive details to each recording; the centre notes that its audio and video catalogues require a password for access.[3]

A library collection in many languages

The National Library of Vanuatu’s Vanuatu Collection includes literature in Bislama, French and English, alongside material in local vernacular languages. The library also houses Pacific and General Collections.[4]
