Kinshasa through care and collections

The Academy of Fine Arts reported returning 29 restored objects to the Institute of National Museums of Congo at the National Museum in February 2025. A contractor’s page on the National Museum’s 2019 exhibition project lists its exhibition areas. A 2022 study treats the city’s botanical garden and zoo separately, with different establishment dates.

A place worth remembering

Twenty-nine restored objects handed over

The Academy of Fine Arts reported handing over 29 restored art objects to the Institute of National Museums of Congo (IMNC) at the National Museum in February 2025. The academy also describes training museum staff in conservation and restoration. It presents the handover as part of its cooperation with the institute.[2][1]

A dedicated instrument display

In the contractor’s 2019 project, a dedicated display presents traditional musical instruments by type; two further areas are temporary exhibitions.[3]

Two gardens, two histories

The June 2022 environmental and social impact study (EIES) places Kinshasa’s botanical garden and zoo under one institute, but gives separate histories for each. It dates the botanical garden to 1936 and gives its area as six hectares, with nearly 300 plant species; the zoo dates to 1938. The study describes the gardens’ role as ex-situ conservation of flora and fauna.[4]
