Flowers, gears and a museum object in Bern

A 2022 plant-of-the-month page says Gentiana acaulis could be seen in the University of Bern Botanical Garden’s flower clock from 13 May; in sunshine, the flowers opened from 06:00 to 20:00. Elsewhere, Zytglogge carries an astronomical clock, and a museum booklet names Barry the dog’s original taxidermy mount as an exhibition highlight.

A place worth remembering

Gentians in a flower clock

The garden’s 2022 plant-of-the-month page says Gentiana acaulis could be seen in the flower clock from 13 May. In sunshine its flowers were open from 06:00 to 20:00; at night and in poor weather they stayed closed.[1]

Astronomy at Zytglogge

The Zytglogge clock tower has an astronomical clock. Bern Welcome dates its musical mechanism to 1530 and describes a puppet show shortly before the hour.[2]

A preserved mount and skull

A 2014 booklet from the Natural History Museum Bern names Barry’s original taxidermy mount and original skull as exhibition highlights. It says Barry had been in the museum in his then-current form since 1923.[3]
