Berlin in three structures
Berlin’s technical history appears in three different settings: rail exhibits inside 1874 depot sheds, the Archenhold refractor’s 21-metre focal length, and the Great Tropical House’s self-supporting structure.

A place worth remembering
The Anhalter engine sheds
Deutsches Technikmuseum uses the engine sheds of the former Anhalter freight depot for its rail exhibition. The museum dates the sheds to 1874.[1]
A long-focus refractor
Archenhold Observatory in Treptow Park describes a movable refracting telescope with a 21-metre focal length. It says the instrument was first an exhibit at the 1896 Treptow Industry and Trade Exhibition.[2]
The Great Tropical House
The Botanic Garden dates Alfred Koerner’s self-supporting glasshouse to 1905–07. Its 2006–09 refurbishment had to preserve the structure while reducing energy use. The replacement house had been built in the 1960s, after bombing destroyed the original in 1943.[3]
