Bissau: a cathedral tower that doubles as a harbour light

Bissau’s harbour approach uses two lights: the Lighthouse Directory lists one on the cathedral’s north tower and another at the waterfront. The Bandim Health Project says its population-surveillance work began in Bissau in 1978.

A place worth remembering

The cathedral tower: a light marking the harbour approach

The Lighthouse Directory lists a green light on Bissau Cathedral’s north tower, with a 2-second flash and a 7-second dark interval at a focal plane of 36 m (118 ft). In its account, the cathedral light is the back marker of a two-light entrance range that guides ships from the Rio Géba estuary to the Bissau docks. Foghorn Publishing agrees on the light’s colour, rhythm and tower. Milheiro and Costa Dias (2009) record that Vasco Regaleira designed the cathedral in 1942 and that a 1945 process simplified it, applied by João Simões with Galhardo Zilhão’s collaboration.[1][2][3]

The waterfront: a front light and a pier inaugurated in 1953

The Lighthouse Directory places the range’s front light on the Bissau waterfront and lists a focal plane of 13 m (43 ft), with a green light that is on for 2 seconds and off for 7. For the port’s pier (ponte-cais), Milheiro and Costa Dias give July 1948 as the start of construction and 1953 as its inauguration year.[1][2][3]

Bandim: a health surveillance system started in 1978

The project history dates work in Bissau to 1978, when an early nutrition and child-health study and a census in Bandim were under way. Later work included anthropometric surveys and antenatal care; the project says its staff recorded pregnancies, births, deaths and moves. Its urban research lists six Bissau neighbourhoods: Bandim 1 and 2, Belem, Mindará, and Cuntum 1 and 2. The project traces its population-registration records to those early years.[4][5]

Good to know

A few clear answers before you explore.

Why does Bissau Cathedral have a light on its tower?

The Lighthouse Directory describes it as the back marker of the entrance range, whose front light, on the waterfront, helps guide ships from the Rio Géba estuary to the Bissau docks.[1]

Where did the Bandim Health Project start its work?

It began in Bissau in 1978 with nutrition and child-health research and a census in Bandim. The project traces its population registration work to that year.[4][5]

Whose project was Bissau Cathedral originally?

According to Milheiro and Costa Dias (2009), it was originally a 1942 project by Vasco Regaleira; João Simões, with Galhardo Zilhão, simplified it in a 1945 process.[3]
