City
Belmopan, where records meet daily reading
In Belmopan, the national archives catalogue older voices, while two different libraries serve researchers and everyday readers. The city’s records extend far beyond the age of its streets.
At a glance
A place worth remembering
A recording carries a working voice
The Belize Archives and Records Service lists 1957 recordings of folk songs by mahogany cutters. Its collections also include surveyors’ plans from 1861–1977. A visitor can understand the archive as a place for both sound and mapped land, with the dates belonging to the records rather than the city’s founding.[2]
A heritage library keeps many formats
On Mountain View Boulevard, the National Heritage Library holds maps, house plans, photographs, funeral booklets and microfilm. Its microfilm can be viewed on a microform reader on site. A printed plan and a recorded voice offer different ways into the same wider history.[1]
A public library serves the city
Belmopan Public Library is on Mot-mot Lane. Its building opened in 1970, and the library offers lending, reference, reading and research areas for adults and children. Unlike the specialist collections, this is also a place for the city’s ordinary reading life.[3]
